Under My Umbrella, Thinking of You Card

The "Under My Umbrella" set and matching punch are retiring next month.  I'm going to miss this set.  You never know when you need a shower card or like this card, a thinking of you card.  But there's SO many other sets that you can make a thinkin of you card with but not many to make a shower card with.  Then I say, "I'll just make a bunch of shower cards to have on hand."  But that doesn't work for me. When I need a card I usually make a fresh one and I think I figured out why. It's because the whole time I'm making the card I'm thinking about the person who is getting it. So my other option is to stamp and punch a bunch of pieces to make a card with later. I thought that was a great idea but this set has some cute background flowers that need to be stamped later.  And, this is a big AND, not to mention they'd have to be fussy cut if I were to add them to make a background later on down the road.  So I just decided I'd make a few cards with it and move on.  I found a cute card on Pinterest that I thought I'd give a try with what I had. The base of my card is a folded half-sheet of Basic White card stock. This card opens at the bottom and the fold is at the top. The full sheet of card stock was cut in half on the 8-1/2" edge. The front was textured using the "Brick & Mortar" embossing folder.

I cut a piece of Basic White card stock to measure 4-1/4" x 2-1/2" and I stamped the words from the "Under My Umbrella" set using black Memento ink.

Then I stamped the flowers. Once the flowers were stamped I colored them in using both light and dark Poppy Parade, Balmy Blue and Granny Apple Green Blends Pens. For the flower centers I just used the dark Daffodil Delight Blends Pen. The flowers were then colored over using the Wink of Stella pen, but not the leaves. 

The small flower on the umbrella was stamped on a scrap piece of card stock and was colored in the same way as the larger ones.  This flower was fussy cut out. I also added Wink of Stella to those little flowers.

I stamped the umbrella and the boots using Black Memento ink on a scrap piece of Basic White card stock. I colored in the umbrella with both light and dark Blends pens and the boots were colored in with both light and dark Balmy Blue Blends pens. I always start with the lightest pen and work in the dark one on the edges. Then I come back with the light pen and blend in the contrast lines. It smooths out the light and the dark coloring.  It blends them in, hence the name "Blends Pens".  

Once I was done coloring I punched out the umbrella and the boots.  Normally I punch first in case I mess up the coloring but I must have been feeling either brave or confident.  I didn't mess up the coloring. I stayed within the lines this time!

I die cut a Basic White circle from the "Layering Circles" dies using the 2-7/16" one and I die cut a Basic Black scalloped circle using the scalloped one that was just a bit larger than the Basic White circle. I taped those two circles together.

I also cut a 4-1/4" x 2-5/8" piece of Basic Black for the layer on the word panel. And I cut a 4-1/4" x 1" piece of Poppy Parade card stock for the bottom of the card. I know I have the 6" x 6" Brights Collection Designer Series Paper (DSP) with the Poppy Parade designs in it but I couldn't find the stack. I think it's buried in a big mess on my worktable.  I think!! So I just used a piece of Poppy Parade card stock. I was going to texture it using the "Ornate Flowers" embossing folder but I forgot. But it worked out fine anyway.

I glued the Poppy Parade piece to the bottom of the front of the card. Then I taped the word piece to the Basic Black strip and set that in place 3/4" from the bottom of the the front of the card using glue. I glue my pieces to the textured papers because I want to make sure that it will stay. Sometimes you don't always get good contact with texture and the piece comes apart. Gluing makes sure it won't come apart. Just be sure to wait a few seconds for the glue to set. I have continued working on cards and found the piece moved a bit because the glue was not set enough. By the time you are ready to assemble and affix the rest of the pieces the glue should be set. I had used the Tombow Mono glue on my card.

I punched out the umbrella handle using a scrap of Basic Black card stock. Then I set the umbrella top and boots in place to see where the handle should go. Once I determined where the handle should go, I taped it in place. I used my silicone mat and just ran my snail tape over it. The tape doesn't stick to the mat and just magically ends up only on the piece.  Gotta love silicone! I then taped the umbrella and then the boots. I did slide the boots under the umbrella.  I never press down on my taped pieces until I know for sure they are exactly where I want them to be. That way you can remove them or move them without much trouble. 

Dimensionals were added to the circle and the circle was then set in place on the front of the card.  

The little flower piece was added to the top right of the umbrella using a small Dimensional and the card was done.

It's cute and should brighten up someone's day.  It's got such a bright and cheery look to it.
