Today's card is a very fun popup gift card. I love interactive cards. It's fun when I find them. It's fun when they are cool looking. And it's even more fun when you can reproduce them! I found the tutorial on Pinterest. It's very easy to follow, though I do recommend you watch it first before you follow along. The guy makes a few minor mistakes that if you were following along right away, you might make the same ones and ruin your mechanism. I skipped the card front part of the video because I just wanted to learn to make the mechanism.
The base of my card is a folded half-sheet of Whisper White card stock. This card opens at the bottom and the fold is at the top. This technique works if the card opens on the right or the bottom. I suppose you could try it from the side but you won't get a very pronounced popup look. Play around with it and see what you think. Personally, I wouldn't do it because I like the look of the way it opens on the right or bottom.
I followed the instructions for the mechanism. I cut my strip 2-3/8" x 8-1/2" and I immediately cut off two 3/8" strips on the long side. Now my piece measured 2-3/8" x 7". That's the size you need and then you score. After the scoring, you glue and assemble. It's very easy to do, just pay attention to the orientation of the mechanism as you are assembling it. When you are gluing the long cut strip, that part is the back but the center score line next to it starts the panel for the front. So you have the front and back on one side until you fold it. I had a little difficulty with that part because it was hard to see on the screen what happened. The guys hands got in the way and he folded it a bit too quick for me. SO I played it a few times and then when I realized which was the front and which was the back I was able to figure it out better. Oh and the two 1-1/4" strips are actually the back. So your parts are back, front, back all on one side. It will make more sense after you watch the video.
I also got a bit confused at where to glut that tab. He measured 3/8" but didn't say exactly where. And his card is a note card not a full-sized card. I marked the center of the inside cover at 1/2" above the fold. That mark is where the score line is glued and the rest of the tab is above it. After I got that figured out, the rest was just adding glue to the back along the 3/8" strip and the two small rectangles above it. Keep your glue away from the long folded (and glued) shaft, that is what makes the center piece roll up and with your gift card attached to it, it makes it pop up. Again, watch the video and come back here for the clarifications.
Now for the front of my card. I used a 2-1/2" x 3-3/4" piece of Designer Series Paper (DSP) from the "Best Dressed" 6" x 6" paper pack. I taped the DSP to a 2-3/4" x 4" piece of Mossy Meadow card stock. I taped those two layers to the left side of the card front.
I stamped the words from the "Bonanza Buddies" set using Melon Mambo ink. The colors used on the DSP that would match that is Lovely Lipstick. I don't have that color so I thought the next closest one was Melon Mambo and it worked nicely. I LOVE those words. They just create a warm and loving feeling. I die cut the words using the 2-3/8" "Stitched Circle" die. Then I die cut a scalloped circle just a bit larger than the stitched circle. The scalloped circle was too large to cut it from the layer to save card stock and that was okay. It's such a pretty card that it was worth the extra card stock used for the scalloped circle. I taped the circles together and set them in place on the card using Dimensionals.
I had some Baker's Twine left over from one of the Paper Pumpkin kits. I tied it in a bow and glued it just below the words on the circle.
I added my gift card using a single small glue dot.
Isn't this a fun pop up gift card holder? I have some birthday's coming up and I thought this would be a fun way to give a gift card. It's a lot better than it just falling out of the card.
This would also be a great way to give out a business card, changing the wording on the front of course. Nothing like "Happy Birthday, here's my business card!" LOL
And this would be a fun children's card, using a cute character inside instead of a gift card. Or a photo of something large that you couldn't wrap up, like a skateboard, bike, etc. Lot's of possibilities with this fun technique.
Thank you SO much for stopping by today,
Wanda
