It's probably not a good time to put up Blog Candy with some readers out of town. But there is good news to this too. I have LOTS of Blog Candy to give away. This Blog Candy is from my Blogaversary Blog Candy. The winner did not contact me. SO I'm offering it up again!!!
Then I will be offering some Blog Candy because I did finish my Christmas cards before Thanksgiving. I just have to put the wording on the insides and address them. To me being done was all the coloring and assembling the front! And I was SO glad to have that part all done. When I post the blog candy in a few days for that I will repost our Christmas card.
And then there's that "Chatty Cathy" Blog Candy coming up too. I will hitting my 1000th post in a few more days. I'm at 995 right now. Shocker, huh??? I have enjoyed creating each and every one of those posts. I am still loving blogging and I hope to continue at the same pace.
Oh and I can't forget about the Blog Candy for reaching 600,000 hits. I'm a little late with that one but it's always better late than never, right??? LOL
I am diligantly working on the technique pages and I believe I have 5 more left before I have the second set of 20 done. Then I will write up a post to let you all know. I do have the list of those who purchased the first set of 20 and I will be emailing you. And this time I made more. Oh and I am remaking the first set of 20 for those of you interested. Please don't email me about it yet. The pages will be put in my online store and you can purchase them through there. It will even tell you how many sets are left so you know for sure if you will be able to get one or not. But that won't be for a couple of weeks yet so we don't need to think about it right now!!

Here's mine!!! Many years ago my sister-in-law was helping to make dinner, everyone brought dishes to share. Hers was the sweet potatoes with the marshmallows slightly melted on them. It was VERY pretty and the marshmallows were toasted just right. They were such pretty colors too. As it turned out they were fruit flavored marshmallows, cherry, lemon, lime and orange!!! Now that was a VERY interesting taste!!!! And funny thing, she's never made them that colorful since!!! LOL

I had my son and his wife and two children for dinner and I made two new desserts...they were both very good...one was a no bake pumpkin pie - made with vanilla pudding and whip cream...mmmmm mmmmm good and the other one was chocolate cake (like brownies when done) with peanut butter, peanuts and marshmallow...this was also very good... but both were really rich...I usually don't bother with dessert since we are too full from dinner - but these were both worth it.... that's it from me.

Hmmm-have not had anything that was memorable in a strange way, but I did make a Caramel Pumpkin Pecan Gingersnap Cheesecake yesterday - YUMMMOLA! It came from the Pioneer Woman blog - she has some pretty nifty things on there!

I made a sweet potato & apple casserole last year...never had that before and it turned out very yummy! I'm notorious for trying new recipes for the first time with guests!! Can't recall any interesting or odd dishes for Thanksgiving, but I bet there have been some over the years.
ReplyDeleteI just love your blog - and also blog candy! Here's my entry! Last year, I attempted an Eggnog Cheesecake...as I was adding the last egg -mixing all 3 packages of cream cheese, eggnog, vanilla, sugar... everything in the batter - just this one last egg - I dropped the WHOLE egg in it! I tried to get all of the egg shells out - decided to bake it anyway; expensive to throw it away. Hoping no one notice... Long story short, after serving the beautiful cheesecake - everyone found at least one or more shell bit - spitting it out politely until the story came out; the dessert was a hit anyways - and nicknamed the "Egg shell Cheesecake"! I didn't make it this year! But it was missed!
ReplyDeleteWe had a pretty standard meal this Thanksgiving but the desserts were special - my brother brought his version of Ambrosia (mandarin oranges, pineapple, cherries, pears, raspberries, asst'd tropical fruit cocktail, sour cream, mini marshmallows) and I picked up a cream cheese and caramel frosted pumpkin cake from Sam's - it was all very YUMMY tho'!
ReplyDeleteWell, I found out in August that I have several food allergies (Potato, tomato and a few more) so I made a cauliflower puree for myself since I couldn't have mashed potatoes. I think I'll skip it next year! Ha! It was okay (for pureed cauliflower) but didn't really placate my desire for those mashed potatoes! :D

Years ago, my aunt was making Thanksgiving dinner. When she went to take the turkey out of the oven, she somehow broke the thermometer in the turkey. We were afraid to eat the turkey, so we made a meal out of the side dishes and dessert. Every Thanksgiving after that she was reminded of that dinner. Now that I know how harmful mercury can be, I sure am glad we didn't eat that turkey!

i forgot to buy brown sugar and my MIL couldn't find any at the store. She told me she had used syrup in the past, so that is what we did. I also didn't have marshmellows. they didn't turn out bad, I actually liked using the syrup better.
ReplyDeleteWe had 22 adults and I couldn't tell you how many children. But everything went very well. My son deep fryed 1 turkey and one was oven backed,2 hams were deep fryed.Wow they tasted so good and the greese is so hot it leaves all the juises in the turkeys and hams, MMMMMM it was so good. It was the first time I ddn't have to cook, due to my broken shoulder.

ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing I've had and it wasn't this year was the year my oldest daughter wanted to roast the turkey and bring it...it looked delicious....
but it wasn't long before we realized she hadn't cleaned out the INSIDES and had left in everything..*she didn't know there was anything inside of the turkey*..I think she was being a *turkey* that year...lol..she's never offered to roast the turkey again!

Last year did the entire thanksgiving dinner and made a beautiful apple pie for one of the desserts on Wed. afternoon. I set the pie on the stove to cool and got busy w/some of the other dishes Pretty soon I heard a "ping", here I had mistakenly turned on the burner that the pie was sitting on and the Pyrex pie pan broke! I threw it away and went to the store and made another one that night at 10P.M.! Memorable! Thanks for offering the blog candy! Love your blog and check it daily!

ReplyDeleteI made my mashed potatoes in the crock pot this year and they were the best potatoes I've ever made! And they were SO easy! I'm never going back to boiling, straining, and mashing them again. Found the recipe at allrecipes.com! But I substituted chicken broth for the water. Yummy!

I us to live in the USA and i remeber each year how we hade the traditional turkey and ohhhh so great tables. Since i moved her in canada ( i was 8 years old) we stopped celebrating Thanksgiving, with great regret.. i miss it, but her in canada.. they just dont celebrate it.. and we work and the day goes by and is all ordinairy.. I call up my aunt's , uncle's and cousin's in the USA to let them know i think of them on this day..

I made a pumpkin cheesecake about 10 yrs ago now for the first time, it went over so well, that it's a staple at thanksgiving (canadian so it's in October) and christmas. Also on christmas morning my kids HAD to have monkey bread, which was a favorite of President Reagan's according to Nancy herself!
ReplyDeleteOur Thanksgiving was pretty normal. My sister-in-law brought a dessert no one had had before -- angel food cake with pineapples and vanilla pudding and Cool Whip frosting. Was delicious. Not too unusual, but different for us.

ReplyDeleteI think the dish we had that would not normally be considered a Thanksgiving Day dish was the artichoke salad; artichoke hearts; black olives, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Everyone loved it and not a bite was left! It really helped to offset the other rich dishes of the day.
Can't wait to see all the great things you come up with for the Christmas season.
My favorite dessert this year was Pumpkin Praline pie that my neighbor brought over because she has made too many for her family Thanksgiving---it was absolutely delicious.

This Thanksgiving, we didn't have anything out of the ordinary (and come to think of it - I don't remember ANY un-ordinary Thanksgivings)! My favorite, however, was the GRAVY! I use a Cooking Light recipe for my turkey, then use pan drippings and homemade turkey stock to make the gravy...mmmmmmmm!

C'mon...I know there have to be more of these stories out there! My lil sister doesn't cook a lot and she was so proud of her first Thanksgiving meal. It all looked great and smelled even better. This girl is squeemish about a lot of fat, cleaning stuff, etc. So it was a really big deal. When we were helping her get everything into serving dishes we asked why the stuffing wasn't in the bird. She told us she didn't know how to "get the legs undone" and thought they hooked them together so that the bird would be easier to take out and not fall apart. Well...yup...you guessed it.....all the goodies were still inside=0) We thought she was going to pass out when we pulled it all out. The dogs had a feast and we had a good laugh. I don't think she has cooked a turkey since then. Gotta love it!!!

Our Thanksgiving dinners are always the same - Turkey, potatoes, stuffing, salad. Our dinner was over a month ago (I'm in Canada). One year, I hosted Thanksgiving and decided to give Martha Stewart's turkey recipe a try. You had to cover the turkey with a cheesecloth and baste it in a wine mixture every hour until done. This was the 1st time I had ever cooked a turkey. Well, it came out pretty good. My mom hates eating turkey and she loved it - said it was the best tasting turkey she had ever eaten. I love Martha!

The first year that I made the turkey, I searched and searched for the giblet/neck bag, not able to find it, I continued on with fixing the turkey for the oven. Well many hours later, the turkey was ready and you guessed it, as I was removing the stuffing, is when I found the "goodie" bag. Oh well, the turkey was still good!!
ReplyDeleteEvery year we get a Pecan Pie from a local restaurant, they're so good! Well, two years ago, I was working at the restaurand and we brought out the pies, which usually have the chocolate chips visible on the Chocolate Pecan Pies. We couldn't see any, so we re-labeled them Plain Pecan. I happened to take one home for Thanksgiving. It DID have the chocolate chips in it, it turns out somebody assembled them in the wrong order and they were just hidden. My whole family didn't care for the chocolate chip one, it was a mini disaster, and it was my own fault!

Way back 30 years ago, I made an interesting "Jello" salad for DH's family T-giving Dinner. Not a spoon entered into it. I don't remember what colors I mixed together, but with Cool Whip mixed-in, the jello kind of turned out blackish blue in color!!! Hey, I was a college student, what did I know about "cooking"?

Thankfully those who cook for the Thanksgiving meals I've attended are good cooks so I can't come up with any flubbers or anything out of the ordinary.
But I thought I'd share this. I come from a family of 4 brothers and 2 sisters and of course mom & dad. Thanksgiving was always big at our house. Sometimes we had my grandparents sometimes not. But regardless the best china came out, we had turkey, stuffing, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans bacon & onions, cranberry sauce, rolls. Dessert was always homemade, pumpkin, lemon and chocolate pies. MMMM.
Any how the first thanksgiving after I got married we decided that we would go to my hubby's sister's with all of his family and to my parents for dessert. I was totally shocked and broken hearted when she served dinner on paper plates and we sat here and there and everywhere--even on the floor. There was only pop or alcohol to drink and they had world wide wrestling on. What a culture shock!
It's never been that way again and we never talk about it.

My mother made and interesting cake for Thanksgiving. It was only about 3 inches high! LOL! For some reason, the cake didn't rise. She tried the recipe twice and the batter didn't rise either time! The cake tasted good but it was definitely the shortest cake I've ever seen or eaten!
ReplyDeleteOne of my very good friends is a wonderful cook. One of her signature desserts is Carrot cake. Everyone had finished the turkey, dressing, and works but left room for our favorite. When her sister was began eating her piece of cake we noticed she had a funny look on her face as she pulled out paper. During the rush of getting everything ready, Kay had failed to take the paper off the stick of butter! Somehow the cake still tasted good and we have had some good belly laughs. Now no matter what happens we are able to tell that story and make the cook feel a little better, because if it can happen to Kay, it can happen to anyone!

All of my best Thanksgiving meals have been non-traditional -- I guess I'm not a big turkey fan. The absolute best was an authentic Armenian meal, complete with Fasoolya (I probably butchered the spelling on that, but it's a meat/green beans/tomatoes dish); and baklava for dessert. OMG, I'm getting hungry!
ReplyDeletewe always have a very traditional meal, but this year I was putting out the turkey and fixins on the table, and realized I had totally forgotten about the fresh carrots that were still in my fridge! I had to quickly open up a can of corn as a replacement. It worked out just fine!

I really need to get the recipe from her. They was choc cream cheese mixture inside and they was so good. Thinking of making them for Christmas exchange with my sisters this year.

One of our now traditional dishes is spaghetti corn; made with canned corn, onions, butter, cheese and uncooked broken up spaghetti. No one notices the spaghetti in there unless you mention it but they all notice if I make something else! Great blog candy, thanks for the chance to win. jmniffer
ReplyDeleteI was very brave this year!! I made the whole Thanksgiving dinner by myself. My husband wanted cornbread dressing. I combined several recipes and I accomplished this task. Well, it came out fantastic. He loved it and it reminded him of his grandmothers!! Yea!! I did good. The trimmings were great also. My pies were really good. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving with my two wonderful children and my husband.
ReplyDeleteMy Thanksgiving was great. My extended family joined my best friends extended family to celebrate and give thanks. We each bought a dish or two. I tried to make pumpkin balls I saw on Paula Deen's Thanksgiving show. I made some changes for my family and the dish didn't do as well as Paula's. My family doesn't like coconut so I didn't use it. Then I put the cinnamon in the pumpkin mixture instead of rolling the ball in it. The marshmallows ran out and it was a mess. I tried to salvage the balls, but they didn't look good. So I put all of the pumpkin balls in a casserole dish and mixed them up. I put minature marshmallows on the top and broiled for a few minutes. So my casserole made it to the dinner. The dish came back clean and only my mom and daughter knew what happened.

My mom always makes cheese soufle every year. A few years ago, she must have missed a step. The soufle never rose and it was flat as a pancake. It was terrible. We joke about it every year !!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on another blog milestone! My dh is Italian and we always have an Italian meal and then an American meal. This year we added polenta as one of the dishes. It was like a polenta lasagna -- delish!
ReplyDeleteChristmas in our family that consists of about 40 or so ,from great grandmother to great grandchildren is a very special occasion, at this time we enjoy a delicious traditional ci-pâtes or sometimes called six-pâtes casserole, recipe that has been transmitted for many generations. In brief this casserole is made by marinating the meats for 24 hours. in our case it is beef, pork, chicken and deer. Six layers are made, two of the layers are potatoes and vegetables. A meal that everyone looks forward to, along with all the other goodies, people, presents, singing, games and so forth. Wonderful time.

One of the most interesting dishes was my husband's Sweet Potato Souffle. I couldn't figure out why our two picky eaters were eating sweet potatoes! Then I asked DH what was IN the recipe. He replied lots of brown sugar and molasses! Mystery solved! LOL The topping also had nuts and more sugar. It was more of a dessert than a vegetable!

In our family, we are carb-conscious... so last year for thanksgiving, we had a sweet potato shephard's pie instead of the regular potato.. a little bit on the sweet side.. but it tasted great!

OMG! My favorite dish is green bean casserole! The funniest thing I've done has to be where I cooked the turkey with the bag of guts inside it still! Ooops! I don't think it affected the taste - at least nobody died! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing we had for Thanksgiving dinner was my grandmothers cranberry relish. My daughter and I are the only ones who like it but we made it anyhow. It is just fresh cranberries, 1 orange (unpeeled) and 2 apples (with the seeds removed) ground up coursely. Then sugar to taste. It is a taste from the past!! Thanks Wanda. I adore all of your ideas.

My aunt brings marinated carrots to each occasion. These carrots are made at an unidentified time months prior...they are frozen in a big ziploc bag. So hard to want to eat something that is brown (gravy?) and orange that gets squeezed out of a bag.
ReplyDeleteWe had a family gathering one year with the turkey and stuffing and whole works when my sister in law was carrying the bowl of stuffing to the dining room table. I was video taping it for my daughter in the hospital and lo and behold my sisinlaw tripped and the stuffing flew out of the bowl! We never forget that one!

We had 18 for Thanksgiving this year.....got a little crowded in a one bedroom house! I made the strangest dish this year at the request of one of the guests.....a pecan pie - MINUS the pecans! Everyone said it was good. I just can't imagine a good ole pecan pie without those pecans in it though, so I didn't even taste it! Thanks for the chance for blog candy. ReplyDeleteThe most interesting thing I took to this year's T-giving dinner at my son's inlaws was a yummy pumpkin roll! In fact, DH and I just ate the last 2 pieces! Wouldn't you know it ...my son doesn't like cream cheese? So of course, I made another dessert! I chose a new recipe ... Apple pie bars, wich seemed to go over very well ... definitely a lot easier than rolling out a pie crust! LOL

This was the first year I had ever done Thanksgiving completely my self and I didn't know exactly how to clean the turkey. I knew to use salt, but all of my family kept joking saying that it tasted a little bit soapy to them!! We had alot of laughs over it! Congrats on finishing your Christmas cards!! I can't think of anything unusual, we are pretty much traditional stuff. I did make a cake that had pumpkin in it and cool whip, cream cheese and pumpkin (all combined) between all four layers.
ReplyDeleteI hope you didn't draw yet, Wanda! The most interesting and delicious thing I had at Thanksgiving was mashed potatoesd with marscapone cheese and panchetta. It was really yummy! Love the blog candy!!! Thanks for the chance.........

Well it's not a story of a great dish but a disaster. I work nites and don't cook very well to start with and I wanted X-mas dinner to be quick. I bought a green bean pre mixed dish and baked it the amount of time it said but when I served it it looked like green mush, the turkey was dry from over cooking it and the potatoes were lumpy. The gravy was OK but it's hard to ruin jar gravy. Laurie
